Chinese medicine has an extensive history regarding the treatment of headache.Written in Period of Spring and Autumn & War States, Huangdi Neijing has manyreferences about headache. For example, in Miraculous Pivot: Introducion on Meri-dans, it states that dysfunction of the Bladder Meridian manifests as headache, prop-tosis and neck stiffness, and in Plain Questions: Discussion on Various RelationshipsConcerning the Five Zang Organs, it is recorded that pain of vertex is marked bydeficiency in the lower and excess in the upper due to the disorder of the meridianof Foot-Shaoyang and Foot-Taiyang, if it is severe, the disease will be transmitted tokidney.
The name of migraine didn't appear until the Jin and Yuan Dynasties. In the bookTen Texts of Dongyuan: Differentiation of Internal and External Damages （DongyuanShishu）, it is recorded that the pain of half the head is called migraine. In addition, inthe book Confucians' Duties to Their Parents （Rumen Shiqin）, it also describes thatthe pain in the frontal comer or the part superior the ear is called migraine.
